If you imagine American illiberalism as a pendulum, with liberalism as the bottommost point, the summer of 2020, with its massive protests for racial justice and the cultural pressure that resulted, can be seen as the peak of its swing in one direction. Today, with a presidential administration committed to its own forms of illiberalism, the pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction.
