Welcome back to Techne! For more than a hundred years, scientists believed that the big slab in the middle of Stonehenge, the altar stone, came from Wales. But a new analysis of the rock finds that it came from the far northeast of Scotland. Still, I’m unconvinced by this part: “The difficulty of long-distance overland transport of such massive cargo from Scotland, navigating topographic barriers, suggests that it was transported by sea.” In another lifetime, I could totally see myself getting behind a project like this: Roll the rock to the meeting place.
