When will a COVID-19 vaccine be approved? That is the foremost question globally as the COVID-19 pandemic—entering its 10th month—shows no sign of easing on its own. To answer that question, we first need to know when sufficient evidence of the safety and effectiveness of the candidate vaccines will be available.

Scott Ganz is a research fellow in economic policy at the American Enterprise Institute. He is also an associate teaching professor of strategy at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. From 2009 to 2011, he was special assistant to the vice chairman on the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission.

James C. Capretta is a resident fellow and holds the Milton Friedman chair at the American Enterprise Institute.
