In the wake of the coronavirus shutdowns unemployment numbers have reached levels not seen since the Great Depression: 30 million people have filed unemployment claims, and movie theaters, car dealerships, and amusement parks are sitting idle. Even as political leaders face pressure to revoke closure orders, polling shows that most Americans are reluctant to venture out before they feel safe, which will almost certainly mean that economic recovery will be slow.
