When I was about 10, the pop punk band Bowling for Soup released “1985,” a song about, among other things, the unique pain of being left behind. Sung from the perspective of a middle-aged mom in 2003, the lyrics highlight the anguish of being nearly 20 years removed from one’s cultural zenith.
