Max Tegmark, a physics professor at MIT and president of the Future of Life Institute, has a running joke with his wife. At a recent forum hosted by progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the professor described watching an unlikely political alliance coalesce around artificial intelligence—one pairing Silicon Valley researchers who spend their days modeling the existential scenarios that could result from AI’s rise with right-wing and left-wing populist politicians who have spent careers railing against the tech industry.
